Crew Member: Orion VII
Breed and Age: Black Lab/Golden Retriever, age unknown
Orion is a valued member of Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center, working alongside the Forensic Interviewer Program Supervisor to provide emotional support to children and adolescents during forensic interviews. These interviews take place when a child has been a victim of abuse or has witnessed a violent crime. Orion’s calm and reassuring presence helps ease anxiety, allowing children to feel safe and secure as they share their experiences. His ability to offer comfort during these difficult moments makes a profound impact. One child was visibly anxious and shy when he arrived at our center. His mom mentioned that he loved dogs. Megan introduced this 10 year old to Orion and his entire countenance changed, he relaxed. He walked into the forensic interview room and was able to share details about the abuse – all while looking at Orion the entire time!
Orion’s journey to becoming a facility dog began in 2020, during the first year of COVID-19. After an extensive interview process, his handlers completed online coursework followed by in-person training. Orion was carefully matched with Safe Harbor and officially joined the team on graduation day.
Orion was requested to attend a court hearing with a Safe Harbor client. This 12-year-old girl completed her forensic interview before Orion was part of our team. Megan brought Orion to court for the hearing. This would be Orion’s first introduction to the girl and hers to him. Immediately and without hesitation, Orion directed his attention to the 12-year-old girl. He knew exactly who he was there to see and support! He sat at her feet during her testimony on the witness stand. He gave her courage to speak what she needed to speak in front of the man who had abused her. Without her brave testimony, it was likely that her perpetrator would have gone free and potentially harmed other children in the future.
Orion’s favorite thing to do on his day off is to go on long walks. He loves entertaining company at home as well. He really enjoys being the center of attention. Sometimes, he prefers to just nap and be a lazy dog on his days off!
