MICKEY

Safe Horizon

Breed: Labradoodle   |   Age: 13 years old

Meet Mickey

Mickey is a 13-year-old Labradoodle with a calm, loving personality and a natural comfort around children. He grew up with two human sisters and has always been surrounded by kids, which helps him feel relaxed and at ease when supporting children and families.

Rather than showing off or seeking the spotlight, Mickey’s gift is simply being present. He prefers to lie nearby and wait to be loved on, offering children and adults a peaceful, comforting presence. His gentle nature helps create moments of calm connection, especially for those who benefit from quiet companionship.

Through his work connected with Safe Horizon, Mickey helps bring warmth, comfort, and emotional support to the people he meets. Whether someone sits beside him, pets him, or rests near him, Mickey offers a relaxing presence that helps both children and adults feel more at ease.

About Safe Horizon

Safe Horizon is the largest victim service organization in the country, supporting people who have experienced violence, abuse, and exploitation. Its services are designed to meet survivors’ individual needs through client-led support, including counseling, safety planning, legal assistance, emergency shelter, hotlines, clinical services, and help navigating the justice system. Safe Horizon’s Child Advocacy Centers provide children who have experienced sexual or physical abuse with a safe environment to share their story and receive support alongside their families.

Training and Background

Mickey completed the NY Therapy Animals training program, which included dog training and etiquette, role playing, and a final test focused on cues and commands. He began the program in 2018 and continues to complete re-certification testing every two years.

This ongoing training helps Mickey maintain the skills and calm demeanor needed for therapy animal work. His preparation, combined with his naturally gentle personality, allows him to provide supportive, relaxed interactions with both children and adults.

A Moment That Says It All

Some of Mickey’s most memorable moments happen in the simplest ways. Adults and children will lie on the floor with him, hug him, and spend quiet time by his side. Those moments become relaxing and meaningful for everyone involved.

Mickey’s impact is found in that calm connection. He reminds people that comfort does not always need to be big or dramatic. Sometimes it looks like a gentle dog resting nearby, ready to be hugged.
