Where to Star(r)t:
Understanding Child Abuse Charges & Prosecution
- October 22, 2026
- 1:00—2:30PM CST
When a child abuse case lands on your desk, the charge you can actually bring turns on specifics: which statute applies, what injury level it requires, and what the investigation supports. This session walks through North Carolina’s child abuse statutes using the Starr case, laying out the different charges, the injury thresholds each one needs, and the practical snags that surface during investigation and prosecution. Whether you’re a law enforcement officer, an MDT member, a DSS employee, or a prosecutor, it’s built to help you recognize what you’re dealing with before it becomes a problem in court. It’s led by Marissa Kuzbyt, an Assistant District Attorney in North Carolina’s Prosecutorial District 33 who has handled child physical abuse, ICAC, and sexual assault cases in Superior Court since 2016.
